Writing a successful blog does not just happen. Just like anything that is successful, planning is required. Winston Churchill said, “Let our advance worrying become advance thinking and planning.” Instead of worrying what to write, just focus on thinking and planning, then the subject matter will reveal itself.
I see many people start a blog, but over time they run out of things to write about to keep the interest of readers. These bloggers started without a plan. You loose the readers and soon you are just keeping a daily journal for yourself. Here are a few steps that will help you write a successful blog.
Identify your audience. Without a specified audience, you are writing to yourself. Are you writing to reach first-time home buyers? Or are you writing about how you can help someone sell their home quickly for the most money? Your writing needs to be specific to the intended audience to maximize the response of your efforts.
Brainstorm. Now that you know your audience, write down a list of topics that they may be searching for on the Internet to gather additional information. You will be surprised how easy the brainstorming portion is if you know the intended audience. If your audience is first-time home buyers, here are some examples of blog topics: $8,000 tax credit, steps from contract to close, information about home warranties, information about the different financing available to first-time home buyers, etc.
Act. Once you have your topics, now work to expand the information into a 200-300 word posts to convey that you are the expert. Anything longer will lose the reader. Always include in the post a way to contact you for additional information. If the topic is not real estate related, make sure that you let the audience know that you are a REALTOR®. Make sure that the final post provides value to those that read.
Writing a blog may seem intimidating, but it does not have to be. Just have a simple plan in place for you to follow and it will get easier. You can write about anything, for example: the Texas Renaissance Festival, contributing to YPN, announcing the executive board for Humble ISD, and information about the Alspaugh’s Sterling Events party for a purpose to benefit the Vera Bradley Breast Cancer Foundation. Blogging with a plan will get results.
