In real estate, we often hear that success is built on relationships, consistency and showing up. What we don’t always talk about is how intentional involvement within our industry organizations can completely transform your career trajectory.
For me, that journey has led to the honor of being appointed as 2027 President of MIAMI REALTORS® Residential Board — a milestone that didn’t happen overnight, but rather through years of purposeful engagement, service and growth.
It Starts with Showing Up
Building my business was my focus for a long long time. The road for an entrepreneur can feel lonely, as one are constantly building and growing. I was ready for more and I felt it was time to participate in my community. Volunteering at leadership was my next move. After years in the industry establishing a team and managing a brokerage, I made a decision: Rather than just be a member of my local association — I was going to be an active participant. I felt the need for more, to belong to a community and a desire to give back to my industry.
That meant attending meetings regularly, even when my schedule was full. It meant being present, listening, learnin contributing. What I quickly realized is that proximity creates opportunity. The more I showed up, the more I built meaningful relationships with peers, mentors and leaders in our industry. I began attending different networking organizations, chambers of commerce meetings, leadership programs and educational events.
Getting Involved: Committees and Contribution
The next step was deeper involvement. I began serving on committees within MIAMI REALTORS®, which allowed me to understand the inner workings of the association, board responsibilities and guidance from my colleagues; it has allowed me to contribute to initiatives that impact our local market and collaborate with top professionals who share a passion for growth.
Committee work is where you transition from participant and start becoming a contributor. It’s also where leadership skills are developed through collaboration, problem-solving and accountability. As my Chairman says: if you’re not on the table, you’re on the menu.
Expanding My Reach: State and Beyond
My involvement didn’t stop locally. I pursued the opportunity to serve as a state director with Florida Realtors®, which broadened my perspective significantly.
At the state level, I gained exposure to legislative advocacy and policymaking. I also saw what industry trends impacting real estate looked like at a larger scale, and just as equally important, I gained a powerful network of professionals across Florida and beyond.
This experience reinforced a key lesson: leadership grows when you step outside your immediate environment.
Growth Through Travel and Exposure
One of the most impactful aspects of my journey has been the opportunity to travel both domestically and internationally — an opportunity afforded to me through my involvement with my local and state associations.
These experiences allowed me to exchange ideas with professionals from different markets and gain a foundational understanding of global real estate trends. They also provided me the opportunity to represent my local association and business on a larger stage.
Travel isn’t just about location. It adds perspective, and perspective is one of the most valuable assets a leader can have.
Sharing Knowledge: Panels and Workshops
As my involvement grew, so did my opportunities to give back through education. Participating in panels and leading workshops continues to be a natural extension of my journey.
One of the best ways to really know a subject matter is by teaching it. Sharing my experiences has helped me refine my own knowledge and expertise and build confidence as a speaker and leader. These opportunities have also helped me position myself as a resource within my network.
There’s a powerful shift that happens when you move from learning to teaching. It’s one of the ways that you get to tangibly grow as a leader.
Building a Reputation Through Service
Reputation within your association is built long before any title is given or earned. Every meeting attended, every committee served, every panel participated in: the benefits compounded over time.
The longer I participated, the more my recognition grew amongst my peers. I wasn’t just another broker in the room. I became someone known for my consistency, my contribution, my dedication, my leadership and my willingness to serve.
The Result: Leadership Opportunity
Being appointed as 2027 President of MIAMI REALTORS® is not just a personal achievement, but a reflection of over 20 years of service in my community, my commitment to relationship-building and my dedication to the industry.
It represents trust from my peers and colleagues, and more importantly, a responsibility to lead. As a leader, I have the responsibility to inspire and continue creating opportunities for others.
A Message to Young Professionals
Showing up isn’t always easy. As real estate professionals, we have a lot of commitments and responsibilities always pulling at us, but association involvement has the power to transform your business and help you become the leader you want to be. If leadership — even if that means leading a team or starting a brokerage — appeals to you, I recommend getting active in your local or state association and taking advantage of the opportunities that commitment will offer. If you’re part of YPN, here’s formula for making the most of association membership:
- Get involved early. Don’t wait until you feel “ready,” because that day might never come
- Be consistent. Show up, even when it’s inconvenient
- Say yes to opportunities. The ones that push you outside your comfort zone tend to help you grow the most.
- Invest in relationships. Your network will shape your journey
- Give before you get. Leadership is built through service. Focus on how you can contribute and watch the opportunities come to you.
If you’re only focused on transactions, it’ll be hard to find sustainable success in this business. Success in this industry is about continuous transformation to meet the moment. And your association is one of the most powerful platforms to accelerate that transformation.
Leadership is more than a position. It’s a process of learning and growing into a version of yourself that’s ready to take on that responsibility. My journey to President-Elect has been defined by a commitment to growth, service and community, which I express through my involvement with my association. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that the more you pour into your association, the more it pours back into you.
