I have handed keys to many people at real estate closings over my 15 year career, but my most memorable career experience happened last week. I was part of a group that gifted a house we built with our own blistered hands to a loving family of three.
This experience was part of my my first mission trip to Juarez, Mexico with Missions Ministries. Mission accomplished! Our crew of 40 volunteers built two homes, served food at an outreach center, visited an orphanage, built a community store, stocked a clinic, and made a lot of friendships. It was a fulfilling and meaningful week.
I have to admit that even though I was confident leading up to the trip, I became apprehensive the day before I left. I started to question things:
Is it safe? Should I risk being away from my wife and our children? Will the border close? Will I really be able to help build when I’m not all that handy? Will the families be able to understand me?
I’m here to tell you that so thankful that I pressed forward and went. I’ll never forget this trip. While the U.S. has room for improvement, this country is truly great and has many amazing people. I felt incredibly thankful when I got to cross the border as a citizen. We are so fortunate and blessed, and this experience helped give me a new perspective on just how lucky we are to be Americans and help others achieve the American Dream. Homeownership is a vital part of what makes American Dream possible, and we need to constantly reminder ourselves that our real estate industry matters. I highly recommend that other real estate professionals participate in similar community-building experiences.
